Hand-stitched leather placemats

Leather placemats are warm on a wooden table, quiet against porcelain, and they wipe clean in a second. Ours are cut from Crazy Horse leather, 29.5 × 44.5 cm (11.6 × 17.5 in), entirely hand-stitched, with edges burnished and waxed by hand.

Every piece here is drawn, cut, edged and saddle-stitched by hand at our workbench in Istanbul — Zafer at the bench, Pınar at the drawing table. Most are made after you order, in the leather colour and size you choose.

About these pieces

Our placemats

They come in sets — 2, 4, 6 or 8 for a family table, and up to 48 for restaurants and events — and in 15 leather colours, from camel and chestnut to olive, turquoise and black. Crazy Horse is a pull-up leather: plates and cutlery leave light marks that fade back with a warm hand and a little time, so a set looks better after a year of dinners than on the first night.

Hot plates are the question everyone asks. A plated dinner at 50–60 °C is exactly what a mat is for; a dish straight from a 180 °C oven belongs on a trivet, and standing water — a sweating glass left overnight — does more harm than heat. Our Journal article on leather placemats explains sizes and heat in detail.

Questions about placemats

Are leather placemats a good idea?

Yes, if you like a table that ages well. They wipe clean, do not need ironing, protect the table from scratches and darken with use. They are not for dishes straight from the oven — use a trivet for those.

How do you clean leather placemats?

Wipe with a damp cloth after the meal and let them dry flat, away from a radiator. Once or twice a year, rub in a thin coat of leather balm. Never soak them or use olive oil.

How many placemats come in a set?

You choose: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 pieces for home tables, and 24, 36 or 48 for restaurants and events.

Do you make round or custom-size placemats?
